FCSC Overview

The Fairfield County Sports Commission is a 501c (3) non-profit organization dedicated to promoting fitness and an active, healthy lifestyle, as well as personal development through sports.

The Commission, which is an all-volunteer organization except for the executive director position, is the one-stop resource for the sports communities in the county. The main focus of the Commission is creating and supporting programs for fitness awareness education, focused primarily on the 110,000 school age youngsters in the 15 communities the Commission serves. Giving time, effort and money back to the county residents is the primary function of the Commission.

Initiatives that the Sports Commission have begun to support or develop include its own Chelsea Cohen Fitness Academy and the creation of seminars and panels to educate children, parents and coaches about issues in the health and sports worlds.

The Commission also plays a support role in area sporting events in an effort to allow county residents to be active participants, volunteers and spectators. The Commission has played a key role in creating the Park City SportsFest in Bridgeport, a free, educational fan festival that brings together a wide-range of youth organizations that provide activities and information regarding fitness. The SportsFest took place for the fifth time in May 2010. The Commission has approximately 100 people involved in the organization, including local representatives in the 15 communities it directly oversees. Its Fitness Committee and High School Advisory Committee provide highly-qualified experts to address needs in those areas of the community.

The board is comprised of a wide range of people from throughout the county. Executives from the sports industry, universities, hotels, media and business community comprise the board of directors and advisory committee. Prominent athletes and sports personalities make up the Commission's advisory board.

Another key component of the Commission is the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame, which is located at the University of Connecticut-Stamford Campus. The Hall of Fame, created in 2005, honors and recognizes the long, rich tradition of sports in the county, and those athletes, coaches, officials and community leaders who established that tradition. The Hall of Fame inductions are staged each year at the Commission's annual Sports Night awards dinner in October, which acts as a fundraiser for the Commission. Also at SportsNight, 15 Sports Persons of the Year are honored from the communities the Commission oversees.

The Hall of Fame also includes a University of Connecticut wing that honors athletes from Fairfield County that went on to accomplished sports careers at the state university.

The Sports Commission is in its sixth year of existence as an independent entity, after three years as an arm of the Coastal Fairfield County Convention & Visitors Bureau. The Commission's offices are at the University of Connecticut-Stamford Campus, 1 University Place in downtown Stamford.
